Joy Pahl teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in entrepreneurship, strategic management and international business. Her approach to teaching and learning in each setting relies on experiential and active learning methods, case analyses and in-class discussions.
Pahl is a member of the Society for Case Research, NACRA (North American Case Research Association), the Academy of International Business and the Academy of Management. In addition, she completed the Price-Babson Symposium for Entrepreneurial Educators in 2017.
In 2016, Pahl joined representatives from three area colleges to create The Fox Connection, a consortium of colleges and universities in Northeast Wisconsin dedicated to encouraging and enhancing entrepreneurship. Each year this organization hosts a business-pitch contest for college students. In addition, each year St. Norbert College hosts its own business pitch contest, “Shark Attack,” and this is organized by Pahl.
Pahl was the recipient of the Leonard Ledvina Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2002, and the Order of the Omega Educator of the Year in 2005. Pahl serves as faculty advisor for Discoveries International, Inc. (a student-operated business), the Untouchables women’s organization and the SNC Curling Club.
Pahl’s recreational pursuits are seasonal: curling in the fall and winter, and golfing and biking in the spring and summer. Fortunately, she gets to enjoy these pastimes with her husband, and even with her adult children from time to time.
Pahl’s scholarship interests connect well to her teaching. Since she uses a case-intensive approach to teaching, increasingly she has focused on developing business case studies that involve strategic, operational and entrepreneurial decision-making. Her case studies have appeared in The CASE Journal and The Journal of Critical Incidents. Effective management also calls for ethical decision-making, so in order to better understand how students perceive ethical issues in relation to business situations, Pahl collaborated with two of her St. Norbert College colleagues to investigate that question. This resulted in a study that was published in The International Journal of Religion and Spirituality in Society (2020). Pahl was also part of a team that developed a strategic decision-making software tool that is described in the paper entitled “Meta-SWOT: Introducing a New Strategic Planning Tool” (The Journal of Business Strategy, 2012). The software tool has proven to be useful to many organizations as they formulate and prepare to implement their strategic plans.
