About Todd Sarnstrom

Todd Sarnstrom teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of data analytics, computer software and tools for data analysis, and statistics.

Sarnstrom contributes to the college’s Center for Business & Economic Analysis. His professional associations include the American Economic Association, Missouri Valley Economic Association and the Great Lakes Analytics Conference. He was the 2017 recipient of the Graduate Teaching Effectiveness Award from Western Michigan University.

Sarnstrom grew up in the small town of Ellsworth, located in west central Wisconsin. He became interested in economics during his first year of undergraduate studies and earned his Ph.D. in applied economics from Western Michigan University in 2016. He takes particular interest in data analysis as it applies to economics and business. Prior to academia, he worked for a start-up company that developed polymers and composites. There, he was involved in new-product development, production trials, inventory management and rolling out a new ERP system.

Scholarship and research interests

Sarnstrom’s current research and scholarship includes studying firm-level foreign direct investment behavior using data on Japanese multinational enterprises, as well as studying hidden immigrant populations via the Public Use Microdata Sample. His most recent publication appeared in the Journal of Economics, Race & Policy.
